Journey to Teaching

Growing up I did a lot of babysitting but the first time I actually had a job where I worked with kids was about 3 summers ago. I worked at a theatre playhouse in Lake Worth, Fl.  At this playhouse I worked as a stage manager for a summer camp. As the stage manager, I organized the kid’s day as well as help them with each of their roles in the play.  This was a summer internship I did when I was working on a theatre degree back at the University of Tampa. I loved my interaction with the summer camp because it allowed me to be creative.  I believe teachers are and should be very creative people, which is why I am so excited about this career.
The most recent job where I interacted with kids was last summer. Over the summer, I worked as a swim instructor. I taught kids ages 2-12 how to swim. I really enjoyed getting to know each student. I adored the teacher-student bond I had with each student. During this experience I learned a lot about how children learn in different ways. At every lesson I had to be spontaneous and improvise a new strategy when a student couldn’t obtain the concept with the way I was teaching the swim lesson. Every student was so different and I realize that when I walk into a classroom I will most likely have a very diverse classroom. I’m very thankful I had this experience and I will use what I learned in the classroom. If I had the chance and the time I would teach swim lessons again.

For my future, I plan to stay in Florida. I’m not sure where exactly but most likely in the Palm Beach area. I would love to teach an Elementary school that does a lot with the arts. I have a huge background in theatre performance and I would love to be able to contribute that to the school and to the students. I would love to teach the grades K-2nd because I’m intrigued on how much the mature and develop during this stage in there life. After graduating I do plan on getting my masters. I would love to get my masters in concealing so I could be a school consular. But as for right now, I’m excited for this summer session and I’m ready to learn as much as I can.
